Four members of Worthing Table Tennis Club played an important role in the successful delivery of the Butterfly National School Finals held in Wolverhampton, one of the biggest events in the English table tennis calendar.
The prestigious national finals brought together more than 400 young players from across England, competing in over 1,000 matches across a single weekend, with 16 national titles decided across boys’ and girls’ events from Under-11 to Under-19 age groups.
To reach this stage, players and school teams had already progressed through a demanding pathway. Competitors qualify via their county competitions before advancing through regional (area) rounds, with only the very best earning a place at the national finals.
At the top table, Worthing TTC’s Head Coach served as Referee for both the singles and team events, ensuring the competition ran smoothly and to time, with Sally Hughes providing vital support as Deputy Referee, assisting with decision-making, coordinating officials, and helping maintain the high standards expected at a national finals.
On the competition floor, Mirna Hawat took on the role of Table Manager, coordinating matches and keeping play running to schedule, while Marc Ghosh officiated as an umpire, demonstrating the professionalism required at elite-level events.
Their involvement highlights Worthing Table Tennis Club’s strong commitment to volunteer development. The club has built a structured programme designed to support individuals in gaining valuable skills and recognised qualifications, including tournament organisation, umpiring, and coaching.
By investing in its volunteers, the club not only strengthens its own community but also contributes significantly to the wider sport, ensuring major national events like the School Finals are delivered to a high standard.
This latest contribution in Wolverhampton is a testament to both the dedication of the club’s members and the success of its volunteer development pathway.
