Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to umpire at the National Under-21 Tournament held at BATTS Table Tennis Club in Harlow.
It was my first experience officiating at a national event, having previously gained experience in local leagues and smaller 1- and 2-star tournaments. Understandably, I felt a little apprehensive at first, not entirely sure what to expect at this higher level.
From the moment I arrived, however, I was made to feel welcome. The experienced umpires and referees were very supportive and guided me through each stage of the day. What I initially thought would be a one-off experience turned into something quite enjoyable and fulfilling.
The standard of play was impressive, with many close, well-fought rallies and a high level of sportsmanship displayed throughout. It was encouraging to see such commitment and respect among young players, even after difficult matches.
I was also pleased to see a few familiar faces — several of the umpires had attended the Level 1 Umpire Course with me, which helped make the day feel more comfortable and connected.
Although it was a long and demanding day, I came home with a quiet sense of satisfaction and renewed motivation to continue developing as an umpire.
I would also like to express my sincere thanks to Worthing Table Tennis Club, whose support encouraged me to take this step forward — from attending the umpiring course to gaining practical experience in tournaments.
This first national event has been a valuable learning experience, and I look forward to building on it in the future.
